Lake Washington's Fall Calendar Is Set. North Wickham Road Keeps Changing.

"Once mobilized, the county's in-house construction crew anticipates completing the project within approximately 90 days." That line comes from the minutes of the Melbourne City Council meeting on September 9, 2026. It describes the coming rebuild of the North Wickham Road and Lake Washington Road intersection. Brevard County expects to start in fall 2026. A 90-day clock that starts in October or November runs straight through the busiest stretch of the Wickham Park calendar.

This season around Lake Washington Road comes down to two things. You can already write the park's calendar on the fridge, and most of it falls on Friday nights. The road next to it has a new restaurant, a closed cafe, a reworked intersection on the way, and overnight ramp closures on I-95 this very week. The fun part is fixed. The road is the part that moves.

Five Fridays and a few weekends at 2500 Parkway Drive

Look at Brevard County's fall listings for Wickham Park and a pattern shows up quickly. The free events keep landing on Fridays. Here is the season from today, October 5, through early December:

  1. Friday, Oct. 16, 6–9 p.m. A free county concert with Switch featuring Anna and food from eight food trucks.
  2. Friday, Oct. 23, 5–10 p.m. The 12th Annual Kidtoberfest. Its centerpiece is a free Cars Under the Stars showing of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. The movie starts once the sun is down, around 7 p.m., and you can listen through your car stereo or the external speakers. Before the film there are candy giveaways, an inflatable, face painting and food trucks.
  3. Friday, Nov. 6, 5–9 p.m. Wickham Park First Friday, free, with live music and food trucks.
  4. Friday, Nov. 13, through Sunday, Nov. 15. The 18th annual Native Rhythms Festival.
  5. Saturday, Nov. 28, 11 a.m.–4 p.m. Holiday Grinch Fest, with food trucks and more than 100 vendors.
  6. Saturday, Dec. 5, 9–10:30 a.m. Breakfast with Santa at the Wickham Park Community Center, 2815 Leisure Way. Tickets go on sale Oct. 26.

The season has already started. The October First Friday took place on Oct. 2 with the Black Sheep Band, and the county billed it as rain or shine. The weekend after, Oct. 3 and 4, the Melbourne Fall Art & Craft Expo set up 250 booths in the same park. That's the scale this park works at when it's busy.

One detail on start times. The county's listing for the Oct. 2 First Friday said 5:30 p.m., and the November listing says 5 p.m. If you're planning dinner around it, check the start time that week.

The festival with a deeper story than its food trucks

Native Rhythms isn't a typical park weekend. The Indian River Flute Circle and Native Heritage Gathering, Inc. present it. It runs over three days during Native American Heritage Month and honors the cultures of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas through music, especially the Native American flute. This is its eighteenth year.

The organizer's homepage headline says November 13–15. Further down the same page, the text promoting the printable flyer says November 14–16. Florida Today's fall festival roundup also lists the event at 2500 Parkway Drive. If you're bringing guests on that first Friday, check the festival's site the week before.

What isn't at Wickham Park this fall

Two calendar mix-ups are worth heading off. The Space Coast State Fair runs Oct. 29 through Nov. 15 this year at Space Coast Daily Park, 5775 Stadium Parkway in Viera. It isn't on Parkway Drive. Its last day overlaps with Native Rhythms weekend, so the two big events of mid-November are in different parts of the county.

Closer to home, the Wickham Park Community Center gym is scheduled to close Oct. 15 through Oct. 31 "due to elections," according to the City of Melbourne's October schedule. The city notes the schedule is subject to change. Plan around those two weeks if pickup games or open gym are part of your routine.

Lake Washington Park itself has no announced changes. Brevard County still lists its two-lane motorized boat ramp, airboat launch and 120-foot fishing pier. Recent county ramp-closure notices named Fox Lake and Long Point, not Lake Washington.

The 7600 and 7700 blocks of North Wickham turned over in September

The Friday calendar is stable. The road is where the changes are, and the clearest sign this fall is one short stretch of North Wickham Road.

Pepe's Cantina held its planned grand opening on Sept. 18 at 7700 N. Wickham Road. It took over the former Mi Jalisco space. Florida Today's Oct. 1 recap of September openings and closings confirmed it was open. The same recap reported that Lilly Rose Cafe, a few doors down at 7640 N. Wickham Road, closed during September. Next door, The Exercise Coach at 7720 N. Wickham Road, Suite 103, announced a planned July 9 opening.

Farther south, in the 4600 block, two names joined the corridor earlier in the year:

Over one spring and summer, then, a frozen custard spot and a drive-thru coffee chain opened in the 4600 block. Up the road, a Mexican restaurant replaced another Mexican restaurant, and a cafe closed beside it. None of this changes the Friday plan at the park. It does change where you stop before or after.

Two road projects, two different timelines

The September council action marks the end of a long wait. In 2017, the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization commissioned the North Wickham Road Operational Analysis, which covered the stretch between Eau Gallie Boulevard and Lake Washington Road. That study flagged the Lake Washington Road intersection for bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements. The city is putting $100,000 toward construction from transportation impact fees. Council approved the interlocal agreement with the county unanimously.

That intersection project overlaps with separate state work on I-95, and the two run on very different schedules:

N. Wickham Rd / Lake Washington Rd intersection FDOT I-95 resurfacing
Who builds it Brevard County's in-house crew, Project No. 64325 Florida Department of Transportation
What it covers Milling and resurfacing, new sidewalks, crosswalks and curb ramps, pedestrian signal upgrades, an ADA-compliant bus stop, drainage and lighting A 24.1-mile resurfacing that includes the Wickham and Pineda interchange ramps and bridge-deck work over Lake Washington Road
Timing Construction expected to begin in fall 2026, about 90 days once crews mobilize Estimated completion in spring 2027

The county has said "fall 2026" and nothing more specific so far. Treat the start date as expected until crews show up. If they mobilize this month, a 90-day build lasts through Kidtoberfest, Native Rhythms, Grinch Fest and Breakfast with Santa.

The I-95 work is already affecting this week. FDOT scheduled nightly closures from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. of the southbound I-95 off-ramp to Pineda Causeway, Exit 188, for Sunday, Oct. 4, through Tuesday, Oct. 6. The posted detour sends drivers off at westbound Wickham Road, Exit 191, and then south on Lake Andrew Drive to Pineda. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, and Thursday, Oct. 8, the closure moves to the on-ramp from Pineda Causeway to southbound I-95, at the same hours. That detour runs north on Lake Andrew Drive, then east on Wickham Road to its southbound I-95 on-ramp. Closure schedules like this change often, so check the FDOT project page before a late drive home.

Building a Friday that works around the cones

Taken together, the fall plan is simple. Mark Oct. 16, Oct. 23 and Nov. 6 for the park. Hold mid-November for Native Rhythms and confirm its dates the week before. Set an Oct. 26 reminder if Breakfast with Santa tickets matter in your house. Kidtoberfest is a drive-in, so arrive with your car in a good spot and a full charge on whatever plays the audio. Until the county announces a firm start date for the intersection work, budget a few extra minutes for any trip that crosses North Wickham at Lake Washington Road.
